Animist Natural Dyeing Workshop Noon Tran
Learn the animist approach to natural dyeing with Noon Gigi Alvarez Tran. This is the second iteration with the artist in our ongoing workshop series. The class will begin with a discussion in plant color chemistry with fruit vinegars and plant juices from byproducts of flowers, bark, stems, roots, etc. The workshop will cover unique dyeing techniques utilizing soy powder and soy milk with demonstrations in animist dyes with various foods. We will also experiment with natural dye practices on the body (for example fingernails!)
In addition to dyeing, participants will also learn unique tie, pleating and resist techniques and will be encouraged to make their own tea or rice utilizing color changing chemistry that they will learn from the textile animist plant dyeing.
Participants are required to bring a 100% cotton slightly damp blank garment that has just been washed in hot water with either washing soda OR a natural mild soap like Dr. Bronner's). Do NOT use regular laundry detergent.
Noon will provide a small amount of test linens that are already prepped. Participants will bring home a dyed textile they bring, linen tests Noon will provide and tests on large archival Arches watercolor paper.
